BOGOTA, Colombia – Ecopetrol S.A. reports that the Purple Angel-1 well has proven gas in the Colombian Caribbean deepwater, located less than 5 km (3 mi) from 2015’s Kronos-1 discovery.
Based on the information obtained from the two wells, the company said it now estimates the Kronos field to have a gas column of at least 520 m (1,706 ft).
Ecopetrol, which partners withoperator Anadarko on the play, said that Purple Angel-1 well reached a total depth of 4,795 m (15,732 ft) including a water table of 1,835 m (6,020 ft). It registered gas pay intervals totaling an estimated 21 to 34 m (70 to 110 ft) thickness.
Both wells confirm the potential of this hydrocarbon province, located in the southern Colombian Caribbean, the company said.
TheBolette Dolphin drillship used in this operation began drilling the Gorgon-1 well last February in the Purple Angel block, located 27 km (17 mi) northeast of Purple Angel-1.
Ecopetrol said that the drilling of Purple Angel-1 is part of its planned exploration campaign for the year. The company upped its exploration budget to $650 million, and its program is said to include the drilling of five wells in Colombian Caribbean waters.
Ecopetrol holds a 50% share in the Purple Angel block, and onFuerte Norte and Fuerte Sur blocks. The remaining 50% and operatorship is held by Anadarko.
Discussing its 2017 guidance yesterday, the operator said it plans to drill up to 10 exploration/appraisal wells in Colombia, the deepwater Gulf of Mexico, and Côte d’Ivoire.
