STOCKHOLM, Sweden – The semisubmersible Leiv Eiriksson has proven oil and gas for operator Lundin in the Filicudi prospect in the Barents Sea.

Well 7219/12-1 was drilled in license PL533, 40 km (25 mi) southwest of the Johan Castberg oil fields and 30 km (18.6 mi) northwest of Lundin’s Alta and Gohta discoveries on the Loppa High in the southern Barents Sea.

Presently the rig is drilling a side track, 7219/12-1A, on Filicudi, which has reached total depth and confirmed the reservoir and the 129-m (423-ft) gross hydrocarbon column encountered in the first well (split virtually equally between oil and gas).

Lundin assesses the prospect’s oil resources in the range of 35-100 MMboe. Well results indicate significant upside potential that require further appraisal drilling.

The main objective of the program well was to prove oil in Jurassic and Triassic sandstone reservoirs. The rig crew also undertook extensive data acquisition and sampling including coring and logging.

Lundin says Filicudi is on trend withJohan Castberg, where resources are estimated at around 500 MMboe, in similar reservoir intervals. The company has identified numerous additional prospects on the Filicudi trend within PL533 with prospective resources for the trend of up to 700 MMboe.

The partnership is considering drilling up to two more prospects this year on the concession, priorities at present being the 285-MMboe prospective Hufsa and the 218-MMboe prospect Hurri. Results at Filicudi have reduced the risk of these prospects, Lundin adds.

On completion of the side track the rig will drill a second delineation well for Lundin on the Gohta discovery in PL492.
