DELFT, the Netherlands – Ampelmann has started the assembly phase of its Icemann project, which involves development of a new N-type motion compensated gangway system.
The system is said to be capable of withstanding extreme cold offshore (up to -28°C, or -18.4°F), vibrations and vessel motions, while maintaining a safe and reliable means of personnel/equipment/transfer.
The N-type will be installed on one of Sakhalin Energy Investment Co.’s new icebreaking standby vessels offshore northeastRussia due for delivery later this year.
Ampelmann started production of the components for the N-type last summer and various components were delivered to the Condor fabrication hall in Rotterdam late last year for assembly, installation, and testing.
Oscar Calkoen, project director, said: “The new technology required to winterize this system has been a joint effort with existing and new suppliers.”
