Fire reported onboard Scarabeo 5 offshore Norway

Statoil has reported that a fire occurred this afternoon (Nov. 22) in an engine room aboard the Scarabeo 5 semisubmersible drilling rig at 17:30 CET (UTC+1).

STAVANGER, NorwayStatoil has reported that a fire occurred this afternoon (Nov. 22) in an engine room aboard the Scarabeo 5 semisubmersible drilling rig at 17:30 CET (UTC+1).

The operator has accounted for all 106 members of personnel on-board. Fire extinguishing is being carried out on the drilling rig, which is located at the Njord field in the Norwegian Sea.

The public rescue services and the authorities have been notified of the situation. Statoil’s emergency preparedness organization has been mobilized and resources are being assembled to handle the incident. Personnel without emergency duties have been mustered to the lifeboat stations and preparations are being made to evacuate them by helicopter.

No drilling operations were under way at the time of the incident. There are no other installations on the Njord field at the present time. A supply vessel is at the field and several more are under way.

The Scarabeo 5 is operated by Saipem Norwegian Branch.
