ACCRINGTON, UK – Allspeeds has introduced a compact ROV cut loop Webtool cutter for emergency activation of a BOP.
The device is designed to sever the cutting loop to activate the BOP should other measures have failed.
Subsea intervention involves the use of remotely-operated tools that often include cut loops as a redundancy measure, the company says, to prevent a blow-out once all other topsides solutions have been discounted.
The cut loop prevents pressure lock in the hydraulic system needed to activate the BOP.
During intervention, an ROV maintains the Webtool cutter in position over the cut loop in case of an emergency. The wide-mouth, open-sided design is said to facilitate positioning of the tool on the stainless steel, hydraulic cut loop pipe.
Its blade is designed to ensure the cut loop will always fully release pressure once the cutter has been activated.
Allspeeds adds that the cutter can be used at any water depth, with pressure compensation on the hydraulic supply. It weighs 7 kg in water and uses 700 bar (10,152 psi) maximum input pressure.
