OSLO, Norway– Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) Norway, the Norwegian Environment Agency, and the Norwegian Coastal Administration have finished investigations into a crude oil spill last October from the Statfjord OLS B loading buoy in the Norwegian North Sea.
These have identified non-compliance with regulations.
The spill occurred during loading of crude from the Statfjord A platform to theHilda Knutsen shuttle tanker, with an estimated 6-7 cu m (212-247 cf) of oil leaked to the sea from the loading hose.
Wind and waves quickly broke down the slick and helped disperse the oil in the water column.
PSA says the spill was due to corrosion in a segment of the loading hose. Nonconformities related to applying for permission to deploy chemical dispersants and to deficiencies in decision processes and change management.
