WASHINGTON, D.C.– The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has published a notice of intent in the Federal Register to prepare a supplemental environmental impact statement (EIS) for proposed Gulf of Mexico Lease Sales 250 and 251, tentatively scheduled for 2018.

BOEM proposes to offer for oil and gas leasing approximately 72 million acres of the 160 million acres in the GoM. Areas excluded are the whole and partial blocks within the boundary of the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary, the blocks deferred by the Gulf of Mexico Security Act of 2006, the blocks that are beyond the US’ Exclusive Economic Zone in the area known as the northern portion of the Eastern Gap.

As part of the process to prepare the EIS, next month BOEM will hold four public scoping meetings in Gulfport, Mississippi; Mobile, Alabama; Houston; and New Orleans.

The bureau said interested parties are invited to submit written comments on the scope, issues that should be addressed, alternatives that should be considered, and the types of oil and gas activities of interest in the proposed lease sale area.
