Shell confirms small fire at Prelude construction site

Shell has confirmed to Offshore that an incident on the Prelude floating LNG construction site led to a small fire last week.

GEOJE, South KoreaShell has confirmed to Offshore that an incident on the Prelude floating LNG construction site led to a small fire last week.

“Emergency response processes were activated effectively as per plan,” a spokesperson for Shell said. “Two people received medical treatment for minor smoke inhalation - they were fit to return to work the next day.

“Construction activity resumed immediately and the cause of the incident is being investigated. The safety of our people is our first priority.”

ThePrelude FLNG facility, which Shell says is the world’s first such development, will go to work in the Browse basin offshore Australia. It will have a production capacity of at least 5.3 mtpa of liquids; 3.6 mtpa of LNG; 1.3 mtpa of condensate; and 0.4 mtpa of liquefied petroleum gas.

The Technip-Samsung Heavy Industries consortium is the key contractor, and construction is taking place at Samsung’s Geoje, South Korea yard.

Shell has not yet named a delivery date for the project.

Shell 67.5% partners with INPEX (17.5%), CPC (5%), and KOGAS (10%) on Prelude.
