Maersk Drilling to trim Norwegian staff numbers

A spokesperson for Maersk Drilling Norge A/S has confirmed to Offshore that the company will have to lay-off 130-140 employees, coinciding with the end of two vessel contracts.

COPENHAGEN, Denmark– A spokesperson for Maersk Drilling Norge A/S has confirmed to Offshore that the company will have to lay-off 130-140 employees, coinciding with the end of two vessel contracts.

Local union Shop Maersk Ansattes Forening (MAF), under Norwegian trade union Industri Energi, informed that it had been discussing the redundancies with Maersk Drilling Norge over the last few weeks. Calling the situation “highly regrettable,” MAF said that the first round of lay-offs will occur as theMaersk Gallantcontract ends in 3Q, with the remaining lay-offs occurring with the termination of the Maersk Inspirer contract in 4Q.

According toMaersk Drilling’s most recent fleet status report, dated July 1, the Maersk Inspirer is working for Statoil on its Volve field offshore Norway.

TheMaersk Gallant is currently working for Total, also off Norway, after Statoil canceled its contract for the harsh environment jackup.

In May, Maersk Oil announced plans to close its Houston office.
