NORTH PERTH, Australia – MEC Resources Ltd. has issued an update on exploration plans for the PEP11 concession in the offshore Sydney basin.
The company’s subsidiaryAdvent Energy operates, in partnership with Bounty Oil & Gas.
Last September the partners identified a revised drill target on the Baleen prospect on seismic line B4-18 with a total depth of 2,150 m (7,054 ft).
Nearest equivalent depth/age/commercial gas/condensate fields are said to be in the Bowen basin in southeast Queensland to the north.
An analogous 40-bcf gas field (Churchie/Myall Creek) in this basin produces from gas sands between late Permian coal seams at flow rates up to 10 MMcf/d.
According to MEC, these facies appear to be similar in depth and age to the Baleen prospect. Analysis of previous seismic data revealed an anomalous region at the Baleen prospect with a similarity in response to the Myall Creek AVO model.
A well at the planned location would likely encounter thin, anticlinal Triassic Narrabeen sands below the seabed before penetrating the Mulbring/Muree with interbedded gas sands and coal measures.
The partners plan a 200-line km (124-mi) seismic survey to assist drilling preparations for this target which is 30 km (18.6 mi) southeast of Newcastle in New South Wales.
