ABERDEEN, UK – The semisubmersible Transocean Arctic has spudded the Kvalross exploration well 7224/2-1 in the Norwegian Barents Sea for operator Wintershall.

The location, in license PL611, is south ofOMV’s Wisting and Hanssen oil discoveries.

According to partnerFaroe Petroleum, the well will test two independent targets: the Kvalross prospect, which has oil and gas potential in the lower Triassic Klappmyss formation clinoform reservoir; and the Kvaltann prospect, which provides oil potential in a mid-late Triassic Snadd formation channel.

The license was awarded in 2011 under Norway’s 21st round.
