Offshore Falklands Isobel well encounters large oil column

LONDON – Premier Oil’s re-entry well into the Isobel/Elaine structure in the offshore North Falkland basin has proven potentially commercial oil.

Well 14/20-2 was a re-drill of Isobel-1 (14/20-1) drilled during the first part of 2015. This discovered oil in the Isobel Deep reservoir but had to be prematurely abandoned for operational reasons.

The location of the re-drill was 4 km (2.5 mi) west of Isobel-1 in license PL004a. TD was 3,014 m (9,888 ft).

Although the main aim was to re-enter the Isobel Deep sands, 14/20-2 was also designed to test other sand bodies within the F3 sand system. In the event it penetrated five separate fans within the complex:Isobel Deep, Isobel, Elaine South, Emily, and Irene.

All were oil bearing – the well encountered neither gas nor an oil-water contact in any of the sands at this location, where the Isobel Deep reservoir is 350 m (1,148 ft) downdip from 14/20-1. In total the well encountered 27 m (88.6 ft) of net pay in the Isobel Deep, Isobel, and Emily reservoirs.

According to partnerRockhopper Exploration, results indicate an oil column of more than 480 m (1,575 ft). The partners plan further evaluation to calibrate the well with the 3D seismic, in order to better determine the extent of the discovered resource.

Samuel Moody, CEO of Rockhopper, said: “Proving oil this far downdip in the Isobel Deep reservoir, in addition to confirming oil bearing sands at a location so close to the edge of the various other fan bodies…hugely increases the likelihood that the Isobel/Elaine complex can become a third phase of development in the North Falkland basin.”
