WASHINGTON, D.C.– The US Supreme Court has rejected appeals from BP Plc and Anadarko Petroleum Corp. and let stand the ruling by a US District judge in New Orleans that BP and Anadarko were automatically liable as co-owners of the DeepwaterHorizon oil rig.
Bloomberg also reports that District Judge Carl Barbier is expected to rule soon on a US request for as much as $13.7 billion in civil fines from BP and more than $1 billion from Anadarko.
Barbier ruled in September thatBP was grossly negligent, subjecting the London-based oil company to larger penalties. That ruling was not brought before the Supreme Court.
