STOCKHOLM, Sweden – Lundin Norway has discovered sub-commercial oil with its latest wildcat well in the Norwegian North Sea.
The semisubmersibleBredford Dolphin drilled the Morkel prospect in license PL579, 180 km (112 mi) west of Florø and 40 km (25 mi) northwest of the Snorre field.
The well encountered oil in sandstones in a 173-m (567 ft) reservoir interval interpreted to be Triassic-age Lunde formation, but with low reservoir quality and poor production characteristics.
Lundin has authorization from the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) to drill its fourth appraisal well in license PL679 in the Barents Sea.
Additionally, NPD has authorized Statoil to use the semisubSonga Trym to drill exploratory wells 15/6-13 A and B in PL 029B, close to the Gina Krog field in the central Norwegian North Sea; and Det norske oljeselskap to drill an appraisal well on the Ivar Aasen field in the same region from the jackup Maersk Interceptor.
