MT MARTHA, Australia – Karoon Gas Australia has discovered oil in the Echidna structure in the Santos basin offshore Brazil.

The Echidna-1 well, drilled by the semisubmersibleOlinda Star, intersected an oil-bearing section in Paleocene sands, according to mud log and LWD data. The mud log revealed elevated gas readings and oil florescence in sandstones.

Wireline logging now follows, with a view to determine the extent of the gross and net columns. This program will involve recording pressure data, reservoir fluids sampling, and petrophysical logging.

Further intervals of elevated mud log gas and oil florescence observed in the Maastrichtian section will also be evaluated.

Karoon operates block S-M-1102, in partnership with Pacific Rubiales Energy.
