COPENHAGEN, Denmark – Welltec has deployed new equipment to help an operator offshore Azerbaijan restore production from a platform well.
The program was delayed when a setting tool and plug became stuck downhole. The plug had set only partially, not breaking the shear stud and therefore trapping the tool.
The situation deteriorated when the slickline operation to fish the tool latched it but then also got stuck.
Welltec’s Well Stroker(R) XXS is an e-line deployed tool with the ability to pull or push up to 60,000 lb on objects in a well. The company was able to mobilize the tool offshore, rigging it up and running it in the well to recover the stuck tool strings.
In the first run the Well Stroker(R) XXS latched the slickline tool, which was connected to the setting tool, and began pulling. At 55,000 lb force the shear ring parted, freeing the plug and the tool strings. These were subsequently retrieved and another plug set finishing the operation.
Without this intervention, Welletc claims, the operator would have had to bring in a more costly heavy-duty coiled tubing to accomplish the task.
