COSCO begins construction on new heavy-lift vessel

GUANGZHOU, China – COSCO Shipping Co. Ltd. has cut steel on a new semisubmersible heavy-lift vessel. The ship, named Guang Hua Kou, is being constructed by Guangzhou Shipyard International in China with delivery expected in 4Q 2016.

The 90,000 DWT, purpose-built heavy-lift vessel will have an open deck measuring 211.2 m x 68 m (693 ft x 223 ft), large enough to carry the largest offshore structures, semisubmersible rigs, and jackups. Key features include stern- or side-loading capabilities, DP-2, a diesel-electric propulsion system for a service speed of 13.5 knots, and four high-capacity air compressors to ballast the deck to a depth of 16 m (52 ft).

TheGuang Hua Kou is expected to be able to transport 75,000 metric tons (82,673 tons) of weight, although that number varies based on the center of gravity for specific cargoes.
