RIO DE JANEIRO – Petrobras says it set a new water depth record for exploratory drilling offshore Brazil.
This was established in February while drilling a well in 2,990 m (9,809 ft) of water in theMoita Bonita area of the Sergipe-Alagoas basin, 92 km (57 mi) from Aracaju.
According toPetrobras, only six exploration wells across the world have exceeded this depth.
The deepwater discoveries in the Sergipe-Alagoas basin since 2010 have revealed a promising new frontier play, the company added. A drillstem test in 2012 confirmed the presence of good-quality 41º API oil and good reservoir productivity.
Eight other wells in the region have been drilled in water depths of more than 2,700 m (8,858 ft), Petrobras added, all within a three-year period. Conditions locally are problematic, including strong ocean currents.
