STAVANGER, Norway – Statoil has discovered a small oil accumulation with a wildcat well in the southern Norwegian North Sea.
The jackupMaersk Gallant drilled well 2/4-22 S in 67 m (220 ft) of water on production license 146. It was drilled around 20 km (12.4 mi) north of the Ekofisk field and 2.3 km (1.4 mi) northeast of the 2/4-21 discovery.
The primary exploration target for well 2/4-22 S was to prove petroleum in reservoir rocks in the Permian (in the Rotliegend group). The secondary exploration target was to prove petroleum in reservoir rocks in the Middle Jurassic (the Bryne formation).
According to the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate, the well intersected a 27-m (88.6-ft) oil column in the Permian (Rotliegend), of which 24 m (79 ft) was sandstone of good reservoir quality.
In the secondary exploration target, the well encountered a 49-m (161-ft) total oil column in the Bryne and Ula formations, about 15 m (49 ft) of which was from multiple thin sandstone layers with good to poor reservoir quality.
NPD estimates volumes in the range of 0.7-2 MMcmoe recoverable. Further studies are needed to determine whether the find can be included as part of a future development of the area.
This was the ninth exploration well on the license which was awarded in 1988.Maersk Gallantwill next drill exploration well 2/4-23 in the same license.
