TORSHAVN, Faroe Islands – The drillship West Navigator has discovered gas in the Centrica-operated Ivory prospect, 20 km (12.4 mi) northeast of the Aasta Hansteen field in the Norwegian Sea.
According to partner Atlantic Petroleum, the PL528 B Ivory exploration well tested the westernmost segment of the structure, with the main goal of proving hydrocarbons in the Kvitnos formation sandstones.
It was drilled downdip from the crest of the structure, encountering a 12-m (39-ft) gas-zone. In the secondary Lysing formation target the well penetrated a poorer than anticipated water-bearing sand.
Atlantic says more work is needed to evaluate the resource potential, but if it is commercial, it could be tied back to Aasta Hansteen infrastructure, which is due to come onstream in 2017.
Another partner, Rocksource, estimates resources below the pre-drill low case estimate of 280 bcf (7.9 bcm) of gas.
The partnership will evaluate the results and remaining prospectivity of the license. The well will be permanently P&A’d.
