LONDON – BP has appointed Emerson Process Management as the main automation contractor for the Shah Deniz Stage 2 development in the Azeri sector of the Caspian Sea.
Under the $40-million-plus contract, Emerson will provide integrated control and safety systems to assist control of gas production on two new offshore platforms and at an expanded gas processing plant at the onshore Sangachal terminal.
Emerson’s automation solution will use the company’s DeltaV distributed control system, DeltaV SIS process safety system, and AMS Suite predictive maintenance software.
The DeltaV system will control and monitor topsides, subsea, and onshore operations. The DeltaV SIS system will perform process and emergency shutdown functions, and control the fire and gas detection systems to facilitate secure gas production. Electronic Marshalling with intrinsically safe CHARMs technology is expected to help reduce the complexity of connecting the automation systems with the various control and measurement devices.
Finally, the AMS software will provide predictive diagnostics from the control and measurement devices to allow corrective maintenance to be implemented where needed. Diagnostic data will be integrated with similar information from BP’s offshore Chirag project to detail the overall asset performance of the company’s operations in the Caspian Sea.
