LONDON – BP confirms it has restarted gas production at the Rhum field in the UK central North Sea.
The field was developed as a subsea tieback to the BP-operated Bruce production complex. However, production was suspended in 2010 following the imposition of sanctions against Iran – ownership of Rhum is divided between BP and theIranian Oil Co. (IOC).
Last year, the UK government said it supported a field re-start, both to prevent the possible erosion of Rhum’s value – domestically produced gas is an increasingly precious commodity in the UK – and to avoid potential environmental damage. At the time, the government said IOC would receive its share of the revenues from gas sales at Rhum, although would be placed in a frozen account while the sanctions remained.
