THE WOODLANDS, Texas – The Environmentally Friendly Drilling Systems (EFD) Program, managed by the Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC), has launched its Virtual Hydraulic Fracturing website, which provides a virtual tour of the safest and best practices available for hydraulic fracturing.
With funding from the Ground Water Protection Council, HARC worked with the Epic Software Group and other members of the EFD team to develop the interactive, multi-media web application.
Dr. Rich Haut, director of the EFD Program, says that the new site demonstrates the latest advances in environmentally friendly technologies that can be used to address issues associated with natural gas development on hydraulic fracturing sites.
“The use of this state-of-the-art gaming software and graphics application is intended to familiarize users with the best practices associated with hydraulic fracturing, as well as increase the public’s understanding of these operations,” Haut said.
Located atwww.efdvirtualsite.org, the site is free and available to the public. It is an extension of the Virtual Drilling Rig site that EFD released in October 2012.
The new site was developed in response to requests by operators, service companies, suppliers, and environmental organizations interested in mitigating the environmental costs that are sometimes associated with fracturing.
Site visitors can “walk around” a hydraulic fracturing site and, when they come across an object that turns green, can click on it to reveal videos, case studies, and literature showing methods and tools that address environmental issues. The program is designed to share environmentally sustainable technologies – now available or under development – with those in industry, government, and education.
