STAVANGER, Norway – Stavanger Engineering and Scantech have combined their well intervention capabilities to develop a solution for coiled tubing tension frames with weak links for use on semisubmersible rigs. The equipment combines Stavanger Engineering’s tension frames with Scantech’s Weak Link Bail technology.

The tension frames have a capacity of 350 sT and act as a work window that follows the rig’s movement during coiled tubing operations. The equipment incorporates Scantech’s patented Weak Link Bail technology to protect personnel and equipment in case of heave compensator lock-up.

The dangers of failure in the heave compensating system were demonstrated in 2008, when such an incident caused a 4-metric ton (4.4-ton) object to be thrown 25 m (82 ft) above the drill floor of a semisubmersible rig in theNorth Sea. The current regulations require identification of weak links in riser systems to avoid similar incidents.
