MOSCOW – A research and development expedition is under way in the White Sea off northern Russia, the aim being to investigate ice and metocean conditions in the Russian arctic.
Organizers are theArctic Research and Design Center (a joint venture between Rosneft and ExxonMobil) supported by Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute specialists.
The scientific research vesselAkademik Tryoshnikov has left the port of Arkhangelsk to follow the route from the Kara Sea to the Chukchi Sea (virtually the entire length of the Russian Arctic coast).
During the 57-day expedition, scientists will explore the territory of several Rosneft license blocks in the Laptev Sea, the Kara Sea, the East Siberian Sea, and the Chukchi Sea. On the agenda are meteorological, hydrological, glaciological, volcanological, and geochemical investigations.
The team is expected to launch three meteorological observing stations and 16 buoy-based stations to study current, water mass distribution, and temperature variability.
Additionally surveyors will install sensors on icebergs to monitor their coordinates and drift at the archipelagoes of Novaya Zemlya and Severnaya Zemlya, as well as on glaciers and volcanoes on the De Long Islands.
Another goal is a geochemical survey to detect oil and gas shows in the Laptev Sea and the Chukchi Sea.
