OSLO, Norway – Statoil Petroleum has discovered apparently commercial gas with its latest wildcat in the Barents Sea.

The semisubmersibleTransocean Spitsbergen drilled well 7325/1-1, the second on license PL 615, around 56 km (35 mi) northeast of oil discovery well 7324/8-1 and 360 km (223 mi) north of Hammerfest on the northern Norwegian mainland.

According to the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate, the well had traces of hydrocarbons in sandstones in the Triassic Kobbe formation and roughly 55 m (180 ft) of net reservoir rock in the early to middle Triassic Snadd formation of which 10 m (33 ft) contained gas.

The well has been P&A’d. The rig is heading to PL 614 to drill exploration well 7324/9-1.
