STAVANGER, Norway – Statoil says it plans to start a new drilling campaign next summer to increase recovery from the Oseberg Øst field in the Norwegian North Sea.

The company has contracted Prosafe’s semisubmersible floatelSafe Scandinavia to support the program. The rig will be modified for storage and treatment of drilling fluid and cuttings. This should make drilling operations from the field’s platform more efficient, Statoil claims, allowing longer wells to be drilled than is currently possible.

“We are expecting to increase the recovery rate on Oseberg Øst from around 20% to up to 30% when we drill the first planned wells,” said Kjetil Hove, senior vice president for operations in Statoil’s Development & Production Norway business area.

“We also have the possibility of drilling more wells and further increasing the recovery rate towards 40%, which is almost double the rate in the plan for development and operation.”

Westcon in Ølensvåg will modify the floatel, which has been contracted for three years plus one optional year.

Oseberg Øst is the smallest platform in theOseberg area. It is 25 km (16 mi) northeast of the Oseberg field center. The field’s reservoirs are layered with limited communication between the layers, making recovery more difficult than from the other Oseberg fields.

Statoil’s partners in the license are Petoro, Total E&P Norge, and ConocoPhillips Skandinavia.
