WELLINGTON, New Zealand – The semisubmersible Kan Tan IV has spudded the Oi-1 exploration well 37 km (23 mi) offshore Taranaki in the PMP 38158 permit.

According to partnerNew Zealand Oil & Gas, the well will be drilled vertically to a measured TD of 3,881 m (12,730 ft), in a water depth of 120 m (393 ft).

Prospective resources could be up to 11 MMbbl of recoverable oil. If results indicate a hydrocarbon-bearing reservoir, the partners may opt to drill a side track hole to glean additional information.

A commercial result could be tied back to the Tui production facility, theFPSOUmuroa.
