LONDON– The drillship PetroSaudi Discoverer has spudded the EMD-1 well on the Mahdia permit offshore Tunisia for operator Circle Oil.

The well is near various producing oil fields, including Tazerka, Birsa, Oudna and Halk El Menzel, and the Maamoura gas field.

It will test the play potential of the El Mediouni prospect, including the primary Birsa Sands target and the secondary fractured carbonates of the Ketatna formation.

Circle’s pre-drill P50 estimate of in place oil in the Birsa Sands is 185 MMbbl. It expects to reach the primary target at 1,260 m (4,134 ft) MD with the Ketatna Carbonates at 1,460 m (13,648 ft).

Recoverable resources for El Medouini could be 46 MMbbl solely for the Birsa Sands objective, compared with a standard 10 MMbbl commercial threshold for the area.

Drilling could last five to seven weeks.
