HOUSTONCaterpillar Oil & Gas reports that the Cat C175 and Cat 3516B generator sets have been selected to power five Super Class B jackup rigs. Each rig will be equipped with five Cat C175 generator sets, each with rated power of 1,833 ekW at 60 Hz (1,200 rpm), for prime power as well as 1x Cat 3516B generator set providing emergency power.

The newbuilds are being constructed byKeppel FELS in Singapore, and the Cat power solutions will be delivered over the next two years. Cat dealer Tractors Singapore Ltd. (TSL) led Caterpillar’s efforts on the project.

Offering 20% more installed power than 3516C (HD) offshore generator sets, the company says the C175-16 allows for deeper drilling and higher mud pump loading. Its compact footprint offers weight savings when compared to medium-speed engines and allows for retrofit with today’s Cat 3516 generator sets. In addition, its full-featured control system provides for easy interface with the local rig network, and the generator can be controlled and monitored remotely.

The C175-16 is also designed to be fuel efficient, incorporating a fuel system that uses a high-pressure fuel pump and control valve that deliver multiple precise injections within a single combustion event – resulting in lower emissions, improved performance, and reduced fuel consumption. Driven by two ADEM A4 engine control modules, the C175-16 engine features full redundancy and provides superior performance, even in the most demanding environments.
