TRONDHEIM, Norway – Statoil is completing its latest two appraisal wells on the Johan Sverdrup oil field in production license 265 in the central Norwegian North Sea.

According to partner Det norske oljeselskap, the aim was to examine the extent and properties of reservoir rocks in the northernmost part of theJohan Sverdrup structure.

Well 16/2-19 encountered 6 m (19.7-ft) gross oil-bearing sandstone assumed to constitute part of the Statfjord Group. It was drilled to a vertical depth of 2,024 m (6,640 ft) and terminated in basement rocks.

A 1,000-m (3,281-ft) side track well (16/2-19A) was drilled toward the southwest to clarify the northern extent of the Draupne formation sandstones that comprise the main reservoir. This well intersected a 12-m (39.3-ft) oil-bearing sandstone/siltstone interval. It was drilled to a vertical depth of 1,971 m (6,466 ft) and terminated in basement rocks.

Results will be incorporated in the field development program.
