ZURICH, Switzerland – MAN Diesel & Turbo will provide a high-speed, oil-free, integrated motor compressor for the Ivar Aasen production platform in the Norwegian North Sea.

This will be MAN’s first hermetically sealed compressor installed on an offshore production facility.SMOE in Singapore is building the platform for operator Det norske oljeselskap.

The multi-stage radial compressor (1x100%), arranged in tandem configuration around a centrally positioned 9.5-MW high-speed electrical motor compressor, will be used to export produced gas to Norway’s west coast.

Mathias Scherer, vice president sales and contracts in Zurich, said: “This compressor technology has a great business potential for platform operators as the offshore industry is asking for simple, robust, and safe systems which can be integrated into cramped environments.“

According to MAN, the main features of its compressors are the high-speed motor and active magnetic bearings. The absence of a dry gas seal system and an oil system, which allows the compressors to be hermetically sealed, reduces complexity and leads to improved reliability, the company claims.

It adds that the required footprint and weight of the installation are respectively 60% and 30% lower than traditional compressor designs.

MECOS, acquired by MAN Diesel & Turbo in early 2012, is supplying the magnetic bearings.
