STAVANGER, Norway --An oil and gas leak occurred over the weekend on the Statfjord A platform in the Norwegian North Sea.

According to Statoil, the platform was depressurized and shut down. The leakage has been stopped, and the source tracked and isolated.

At the time of the alert 168 personnel were onboard. Around half were transferred to nearby installations, but were later returned to Statfjord A following normalization of operations.

Production from Statfjord A will be resumed when the cause of the leak has been clarified and corrected.

Statoil recently announced plans to extend the life of the platform – the oldest operating in the Norwegian sector – through 2020.
