VANTAA, Finland – Aker Arctic Technology and Navis Engineering plan to jointly develop dynamic positioning systems for ice operation.
They will work on improved control algorithms, testing of the systems, and use of new “intelligent” technology to overcome the ice challenges. Their aim is to provide more energy-efficient, capable, and safe DP systems for vessels in arctic environments.
Navis Engineering has produced DP systems for icebreakers and ice-class vessels in recent years, including the Sovcomflot-owned multi-functional icebreaking supply vesselsVitus Bering and Aleksey Chirikov, operating for Exxon Neftegaz offshore Sakhalin, eastern Russia.
Aker Arctic’s concepts include the Aker Arctic DAS supply icebreakers SCF Sakhalin and the Aframax tankers Tempera and Mastera. Currently the company is also helping to develop new logistic systems for arctic areas for LNG, as well as designing new Polar icebreakers for the Canadian Coast Guard and the Chinese Polar Research Institute.
