HONG KONGCNOOC has a new oil discovery in the offshore Bohai region.

The company drilled two wells on Luda 5-2 North inLiaodong Bay, in an average water depth of 31 m (102 ft). Luda 5-2N-2 and LD 5-2N-4 were both drilled and completed at a depth of around 1,140 m (3,740 ft), and encountered oil pay zones with total thickness of respectively 120 m (393 ft) and 85 m (279 ft). Luda 5-2N-2 flowed around 1,040 b/d on test.

CNOOC says this find underlines its success with thermalrecovery technology for heavy oil, and will provide a new method of commercializing these types of reserves.

The company also drilled two appraisal wells on the Kenli 9-5/9-6 oil and gas field in the Laixi structure in the southern part of Bohai, in an average water depth close to 9 m (29.5 ft).

Kenli 9-5-2D and Kenli 9-6-2 were completed at respective depths of 2,200 m (7,218 ft) and 1,250 m (4,101 ft), intersecting oil pay zones with total thickness of respectively 70 m (229 ft) and 120 m (393 ft). On test, Kenli 9-6-2 well flowed around 200 b/d.
