Southeastern Australia platform shut down after sheen detected

The Cobia oil production platform in the Bass Strait offshore southeastern Australia is shut down in response to an observed sheen on the water nearby.

MELBOURNE, Australia – The Cobia oil production platform in the Bass Strait offshore southeastern Australia is shut down in response to an observed sheen on the water nearby.

Esso Australia responded as outlined in its Oil Spill Response Plan and the platform will remain shut down during an investigation. An aerial survey indicates the sheen dispersed naturally.

Cobia is asteel-jacket platform 68 km (42 mi) offshore in 75 m (246 ft) of water. The entire Bass Strait operations count 23 platforms and 880 of subsea pipeline.
