LONDON – Salamander Energy has discovered oil with its latest exploration well in the Gulf of Thailand.
TheG4/50-5 well was drilled on the Surin prospect in block G4/50 in the central part of the western sub-basin.
The well encountered oil in good-quality Miocene fluvial sandstones in the primary N40 target zone more than 1,525-1,533 m (5,003-5,029 ft) TVDSS. Wireline logs and pressure data confirmed around 8 m (26 ft) of oil pay with recovered samples indicating 31° API crude.
Mapping of the Surin fault block suggests 15-20 m (49-65.6 ft) of column height above the location of the well penetration. The well has since been P&A’d.
Salamander CEO James Menzies said: “The discovery of oil in the Surin fault block, a 25-km [15.5-mi] step out from theBualuang field, has proven the access to an oil charge in the western central sub-basin…This is clearly a positive step in de-risking the neighboring prospects and in understanding the local petroleum system.”
