PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea – The Stena Clyde is P&A’ing the Hagana 1 gas discovery well offshore in the Gulf of Papua.

Earlier, logging confirmed a 9-m (29-ft) gas column within a 13-m (42-ft) sand in the deeper secondary Pliocene objective, said operator Oil Search. The results reinforce findings of a new turbidite sand play with gas charge and retention at this stratigraphic level.

The rig will next drill the Kidukidu prospect in PPL 385, 40 km (25 mi) west-southwest of Hagana.

Hagana is 225 km (140 mi) west-northwest of Port Moresby in a water depth of around 105 m (344 ft). Partners areTotal and Nippon Oil.

It is also 10 km (6.2 mi) northeast ofOil Search’s Flinders 1 recent gas discovery – as the company points out, there had been no previous drilling in the Gulf of Papua for more than a decade.

At Flinders, a gas column was discovered within a thick sand with good reservoir properties.

Oil Search admits that the volumes found have been relatively modest, but the drilling results will allow the 3D seismic surveys to be calibrated with hard data. This should assist prediction of the distribution of potentially gas-saturated sandstone reservoirs in this area offshore Papua New Guinea.
