LONDON – Optimum has a potentially large oil discovery offshore Nigeria.

According to partner Afren, theOgo-1 well, designed to test a four-way dip-closed structure in Turonian, Cenomanian and Albian sandstone reservoirs, confirmed an extension of the same Cretaceous sandstones that brought other finds farther west along the West African Transform Margin.

The well, drilled to a total MD of 10,518 ft (3,206 m), encountered a 524-ft (160-m) gross hydrocarbon section with 216 ft (66 m) of net stacked pay. It targeted 78 MMboe of resources, but evidence suggests reserves could be significantly higher.

Further evaluation is under way with wireline log prior to extending the well to a total MD of 11,800 ft (3,597 m) to target further high potential zones.

This is expected to be followed by a side track, Ogo-1 ST, testing a new play of stratigraphically trapped sediments which pinch-out onto the basement high. Potential resources are estimated at 124 MMboe.
