GENOA, Italy – FMC Technologies has contracted RINA Services for technology qualification for new offshore LNG loading arms on facilities.

Main issues for thefloating storage and regasification unit (FSRU)Toscana operating offshore Italy were the ship motions and automation system governing the interface between the FSRU and visiting LNG carriers.

Following the approval, FMC asked RINA to provide its technology qualification certification for the Chiksan articulated tandem offshore loader (ATOL) marine loading arms.

ATOL has been co-designed with a major energy company to allow for tandem LNG transfer from an offshore installation, such as a floating LNG vessel, to shuttle carriers.

The tandem solution is said to ensure a safe separation distance: transfer is affected via two liquid lines and one vapor line. Each line is 20-in. diameter and is constructed from stainless steel.

The system accommodates reciprocal motions of the vessels, including heave, yaw, roll, and surge in a harsh environment. A dynamic constant position monitoring system is said to provide a permanent safe transfer, and the possibility to proceed with emergency disconnection in case of drift.
