STAVANGER, Norway – ExxonMobil and partner Statoil have sanctioned development of the Julia field in the Gulf of Mexico.

Julia, discovered in 2007, about 200 mi (322 km) south of New Orleans, contains nearly 6 Bbbl of in-place resources, according to Statoil.

Development will be via a subsea tieback to the Chevron-operated Jack and St. Malo floating production platform 15 mi (24 km) away, in which Statoil is also a partner.

Drilling operations are set to start next year with first production planned in 2016. The Julia field’s lifespan is estimated at up to 40 years, with an initial production rate of up to 34,000 b/d of oil.
