NUKK, Greenland – Maersk Oil will lead a joint study ahead of planned exploration offshore Greenland.
The country requires companies to perform a Social Impact Assessment prior to drilling, one part of which is a Social Baseline Study. This should provide descriptions of existing social conditions, development trends, and development goals in communities that may be affected by exploration drilling.
Maersk will lead a study on behalf of itself and three other companies working on exploration in the same area off northwest Greenland: Cairn Energy, ConocoPhillips, and Shell Greenland.
Specialists from each company and their Greenlandic joint venture partner NunaOil will be invited to form a panel to support and guide the study, due to be completed by this summer.
“The collaboration will strengthen the assessment by addressing total impact in the area, avoiding repeated work and ensuring public consultation,” said Carsten Sønderskov, managing director for Maersk Oil Greenland.
The Social Baseline Study will be coordinated by international consultancy, Golder Associates, in partnership with Greenlandic consultancy, Inuplan.
