High-angle drilling pays off on Jodari gas find offshore Tanzania

Offshore staff

LONDON – BG has completed appraisal drilling on the deepwater Jodari gas discovery in block 1 offshore Tanzania.

Three wells were drilled: Jodari South-1, Jodari South ST-1 (a deviated side track) and Jodari North-1. According to partner Ophir Energy, the program demonstrated consistent reservoir quality across the field; confirmed the recoverable estimate of 3.4 tcf (96 bcm); and proved the feasibility of high-angle (sub-horizontal) drilling, which should reduce the number of development wells required.

The Deep Sea Metro 1 drillship has since relocated to drill the Mzia-2 appraisal well, 4 km (2.5 mi) southeast of the Mzia discovery well. Drilling is expected to be completed in late January, after which the rig will perform a drillstem test on Jodari.

Interpretation continues of 3D seismic data acquired recently over the eastern part of block 1. To date basin floor fans and amalgamated channel sequences of Tertiary age have been interpreted, both potentially analogous to those seen on the Mozambique side of the Rovuma Delta.
