ABERDEEN, UK – Reservoir engineering specialist Oilgen has completed a reservoir-modeling project on the Rijn oil field in the Dutch North Sea for operator TAQA Energy Holland.

Rijn is 40 km (25 mi) off the coast of Rotterdam. TAQArestarted production in 2010, more than 10 years after it had been shut down following 15 years of production by former operator Amoco.

The study involved devising 3D reservoir models to improve understanding of the reservoir mechanisms needed to rejuvenate the field, predict its future lifespan, and optimize further development.

Oilgen applied Petrel software for the exercise, which revealed that oil originally in place was probably 15-40 MMbbl higher than thought when production started in the 1980s.

The company has recommended routes for drilling and water injection that could help deliver an additional 5% of oil production. A new well will be drilled next year.
