COPENHAGEN, Denmark -- DONG Energy and its partners have decided against drilling an appraisal well on the Svane gas field in the Danish North Sea.

Svane is at a subsurface depth of 5.5-6 km (18,045-19,685 ft), and at a pressure of 1,200-1,300 bar (17,404-18,855 psi), approaching the limit of current drilling technology.

The partners had announced plans for the program nearly three years ago, at an anticipated cost of DKK 0.6 – 0.9 billion ($107-160 million).

DONG operates the surrounding 04/98 license, which expires on Jan. 1, 2013. The other partners are Bayerngas Danmark, Nordsøfonden, and VNG Danmark.
