UK duo aim to simplify water injection monitoring

EDINBURGH, UK – Heriot-Watt University and LUX Innovate have won $117,000 in funding from the UK’s Technology Strategy Board to test a technology for monitoring produced water for reinjection.

Fluids produced during oil and gas extraction can be complex, often containing oil, solids, treatment chemicals, and microbes.

The fluids are often re-injected into the well to assist oil recovery, although some of the entrained components can cause problems, i.e. blocking the reservoir. Current monitoring of the fluids is time-consuming and complex.

Over the next year the LUX MOTEYE project team will work on developing a tool to analyze the produced water, with Heriot-Watt academics contributing data analysis. The tool should lead to more effective and cost-efficient fluids management.
