ZUG, Switzerland – The Nord Stream consortium has issued more details about potential offshore routes for additional pipelines to take Russian gas to Europe.

A study has confirmed that the extension of the currenttwin Nord Stream pipeline system with one or two additional lines is feasible from technical, environmental, permitting, and financing perspectives.

Several route options have been assessed for further research and development. The study also took into account Europe’s long-term needs for additional gas imports.

In the Gulf of Finland and in the Baltic Sea there are three main route corridor options: through the Finnish EEZ to the Swedish EEZ; through the Estonian EEZ to the Swedish EEZ; and through the Estonian EEZ to the Latvian EEZ and then to the Swedish EEZ.

The consortium plans further investigations in the form of reconnaissance level surveys, environmental impact assessments and stakeholder feedback in the lead-up to a final route proposal.

It has already applied for survey permits in several countries to start work on optimized pipeline routing.
