LONDON– The semisubmersible Leiv Eiriksson has spudded the Scotia exploration well 315 km (196 mi) east of the Falkland Islands capital Stanley.

According to operatorFalklands Oil and Gas Ltd. (FOGL), Scotia is a mid-Cretaceous fan prospect. Drilling is expected to take 75 days, with a TD of about 5,000 m (16,404 ft).

Under a farm-out agreement, Noble Energy will participate in the well (FI 31/12-01) with a 35% interest, reducing FOGL’s holding to 40%.

The location is 114 km (71 mi) from FOGL’s recentLoligo gas discovery, drilled by the same rig.
