HOUSTON – KBR subsidiary GVA has signed a license agreement with Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) in South Korea for fabrication of its GVA 4000NCS Cat D drilling semisubmersible.

Statoil has chosen this concept for its mature fields on the Norwegian continental shelf. Drilling contractor Songa Offshore has ordered four GVA 4000NCS units to be fabricated at DSME.

The Cat D was designed by GVA’s engineering team in Gothenburg, Sweden, and has been developed with operator and industry partners to provide lower-cost drilling and well completion.

The unit, based on the established GVA7500 design, can operate in water depths up to 4,265 ft (1,300 m) and drill wells to 27,887 ft (8,500 m). Although primarily designed for mid-water applications offshore Norway, the concept can be converted for work in deepwater, high-pressure/high-temperature operations, as well as arctic regions.
