Faroe takes stake in Barents Sea prospect

Faroe Petroleum has acquired a 12.5% interest in the Darwin prospect in PL531 in the Norwegian Barents Sea.

ABERDEEN, UK – Faroe Petroleum has acquired a 12.5% interest in the Darwin prospect in PL531 in the Norwegian Barents Sea.

Operator Repsol has secured the semisubmersibleAker Barentsfor a potentially high-impact exploration well on Darwin on the Veslemøy High in the western part of the Barents Sea.

The prospect is a large closure at multiple levels, about 60-80 km (37-49.7 mi) southwest of theSkrugard and Havis oil discoveries. Multiple targets have been identified on 3D seismic data. The first exploration well, which could spud end-December, will test the main Darwin prospect.

Faroe is carrying Talisman Energy’s retained 12.5% share of base cost obligations for the well, in return for a 12.5% share in the license. Other partners are Marathon Oil, RWE Dea, and Concedo.

The agreement is subject to approval by the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy in Norway.

Faroe already holds interests in this area in two large licenses in the Bjarmeland basin to the east.
